WHAT WILL BE DISCOVERED How the film of a soap bubble acts as a prism to create “Newton’s Rings” of color. Mix some sugar into the soap-bubble solution in a bowl. The sugar will make it possible to blow larger bubbles. Blow a soap bubble. At first, while its diameter is still small, the film will be colorless and transparent. However, as you blow more air into the bubble and its diameter increases, the film will become thinner.

Now for your second trick. Hold the glass steady in the same position with one hand. With the other hand, draw the handkerchief tighter so that the concave shape becomes level, like the head of a drum. The water will drop to the new level, but will not spill through the handkerchief. A vacuum is formed at the bottom of the glass, however. Air will penetrate the handkerchief to fill this vacuum. As the air passes through the water it will bubble, as seen in part 2 of the illustration. The water will look and sound as though it is boiling without even being heated!

Place the piece of flannel or wool over the top of a table or desk. Gently blow some soap bubbles onto the piece of cloth. Quickly brush the piece of paper vigorously with the brush to generate a static electrical charge. Hold the piece of paper over some of the soap bubbles. When a bubble is attracted by the charge in the paper it will become elongated, assuming the shape of an egg. As you move the paper closer to the bubble, the magnetic attraction caused by the electrical charge will actually lift the bubble into the air, as though it were dancing or inflated with gas.
