The plan was for X Corps to withdraw to the Benghazi area to act as a reserve in the event that Rommel staged one of his remarkable comebacks. Montgomery’s plan of attack was conventional. He decided on a frontal assault near the coast by 51st and 7th Armoured Divisions to pin down the defences, whilst a wide sweep through the desert to the south by the New Zealand Division would get behind the line and seal Rommel’s forces in a trap.
