Another major voluntary organization involved in rural health work is the Imperial Organization for Social Services, which owns and operates some 240 clinics, all in rural areas. It has been estimated that these 1450 clinics cover about 50 per cent of the rural population living within a radius of seven kilometres of a clinic. In the long term it does not perhaps matter who does the work, provided that it is done, but it is a pity that it is not done by the Red Cross. We need to take a particularly careful look at what voluntary workers can do in child welfare work, and particularly in the type of clinic devised in West Africa for the under-fives. Such clinics have been set up extensively in Zambia, and volunteers are starting to work in them, but it looks as if it is going to be through agencies other than the Red Cross.

I wonder whether this is a common problem in many countries, and whether Miss Hentsch is aware of it? Hentsch: I am aware of this. It seems to me that I spend my life trying to persuade nurses to be interested, and doctors as well. It is mainly a matter of information and the way in which one presents the information. King: The scope of Red Cross activity needs to be widened in the developing countries, particularly in the field of child welfare and nutrition. In Zambia we have reached the stage where a role that might have been taken by the Red Cross is in fact being taken by other organizations.
