Getting paid (Chapter 1) Because of the manner in which I've edited this book, the chronological order of these steps do not correspond to the chapter order, but here is a brief description of each step.  If, however, the animation is for a paying client or your boss, it is your responsibility to initiate and maintain an effective flow of information about the animation.  Worse, many well­heeled decision makers have gross misunderstandings of what an animator can and cannot do.  The client wanted to pay me "any amount of money" to execute the same effect with my computer equipment.

And it will be easy.  That's how it works.  If you run your own production company, you make the most money per hour of creative effort.  It's a little hard to schmooze over a T­1 line.  Short of that leap, you can send your reel to existing shops that already work the feature film market and hope their needs and your reel match up.  If your reel is a starter, you should still be able to get some work doing cable commercials, but if you have a stick of dynamite with a sizzling fuse, head for a top­tier market, hire a rep, and go for broke.

It doesn't exist anymore.  Can you imagine having to spend the equivalent of a house on your first 3­D animation computer?  More on this issue later.  Where to go?  The idea worked for him and none of his customers asked for their money back.  She clamped down on the idea and channeled it well.  Whatever reputation you make in the beginning will most likely follow you throughout your career.  Because my computer cost 25 percent of what the large animation studios were paying, I could carve myself a nice niche, make good money, and never have to spend a cent courting the TV commercial market.
