President George H. W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law in 1990. Any individual who has a disability, or a relationship or association with someone with a disability, is covered by the ADA.

Examples of the types of public accommodations covered under Title III include: movie theaters, buses, homeless shelters, hotels, retail stores, and restaurants. Businesses running these sorts of public services are required to provide “reasonable accommodation” for people with disabilities. This is a difficult term to define, and judges have interpreted it in various ways. Generally it means that whenever possible, businesses should make adjustments to accommodate people with disabilities. If an owner can show that he or she has made an honest attempt to provide accommodations, then this will generally put them in compliance with the law.

Some argue that the goal of antitrust laws can be thought of as promoting allocative economic efficiency.
