The challenges they face each week extend their levels of disequilibrium. The group must discover skills and competencies, new ways of working together, in a radically alternative context so that they can survive. The experience of church leaders reflects the Survivor world more than the pastoral leadership models taught in seminary. 16 Newbigin’s critique of the Western church is that the Gospel was absorbed into and neutralized by the thought forms of modernity. As a contrast, he holds up the way the early church fathers became map-makers.

At the same time, other movements and themes in modernity (such as the rights of the individual and the dominant belief that faith was personal and had little to do with the world of hard facts and truth) tended to marginalize the churches into ghettos of personal faith and private experiences. Modernity has never been a single thing, a straight line, as it were, that was easy to map and clear to describe in relationship to the church. Through the modern period in America, for example, it has been assumed that the church played a central role in society (this is far less so in the UK and simply not the case in Europe, where there are multiple expressions of modernity, what we call multiple modernities).
