After months of training for the first Chindit mission, Operation Longcloth, a strategic hurdle appeared in early February 1943 that almost cancelled it. Wavell had intended to send 77th Indian Brigade into Burma by foot in advance of an assault by IV Corps from Assam across the Chindwin River. These British operations were to temporally coincide with two Chinese offensives, one mounted from China’s Yunnan province and the other a Sino-American effort, under General Stilwell, entering Burma south from Ledo in north-east Assam.

Only 34 of Wingate’s 43 men made it back to Assam on 28 April after recrossing the Chindwin. Of the four dispersal groups of Brigade HQ only one, the defence platoon, reached safety. On 14 May Column 8 crossed the upper Chindwin at Tamanthi, and the HQ column of the Burma Rifles reached Fort Hertz. On the same day the remains of the Southern Group recrossed the Chindwin near Auktaung.
