The word "preservation" is important because while science is useful in identifying our heritage it can also safeguard it. In the course of these four days we shall be talking about the preservation of a heritage which is threatened. There is also another point which makes me happy. We have in this room specialists in both fixed and movable cultural heritage. The presentations will thus deal with archaeological sites and historical monuments, but also with museums and their collections, libraries and archives.
With adequate training the architectural conservator should be: - Able to read a building or site and identify what should be conserved. - Able to identify the emotional, cultural and use values in cultural property. - Able to find and absorb all available sources of information relevant to the cultural property being studied. - Able to apply the UNESCO conventions and ICOMOS Charters and theory and ethics of conservation. - Able to inspect and make reports intelligble to the nonspecialist reader on immoveable cultural property.
