We believe that Merton’s theory of social structure has significant potential for the sociology of sport. To illustrate this potential, we apply the main features of Merton’s theory as sketched above by Sztompka, Crothers and Stinchcombe to an examination of the socio-historical patterns of racial integration in North American sports, especially professional team sports during the last half of the twentieth century.
