The black musicians honing their talents in Detroit, including the Four Tops, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, the Supremes, and Martha and the Vandellas, were attracting white audiences with a sound becoming known as “soul” music. Harry Weinger, a producer and friend of Stevie, relates a conversation with the late Clarence Paul, Stevie’s Motown mentor, who described the way music was never outside of Stevie’s creative vision: “Stevie was always coming up with things—writing on the plane, the bus, the way to the studio.

But the Apollo audience did not have the final word. “Superstition” rose to the top of the music charts. With his next number one hit, “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” Stevie Wonder produced what has been called an American standard, and he was well on his way to a very successful career. With the release of Innervisions, Stevie’s appeal began to cross racial boundaries. The album sold more than 1 million copies and garnered the performer three Grammy Awards, including Best Album, in 1974. 4 INNER VISION IN THE FALL of 1972—a year marked by tense race relations, the winding down of the Vietnam War, and the beginning of the infamous Watergate scandal—Stevie joined John Lennon and Yoko Ono in a concert at Madison Square Garden.
