It is because bodies ‘share in a common life, [that] they are often led, almost instinctively, to paint themselves or to imprint images on their bodies that remind them’ of this life (Durkheim, 1995 : 233). : 233–4). Durkheim’s colleague, Marcel Mauss, built on this analysis by examining how social techniques that are both traditional to and effective within a society become ingrained through apprenticeships into the capacities and habits of the body. For Mauss (1973 : 71–2) ‘there is perhaps no “natural” way for the adult’ to manage their body and, therefore, ‘each society has’, and has to have, ‘its own special habits’ pertaining to the body.
These phenomena possess distinctive properties but are moulded and altered by the effects they have on each other.
